When Jack was first diagnosed, I was horrified. Depressed. Had major anxiety attacks. Cried for hours. Somewhere around Jack’s second year, I felt myself changing. I no longer longed for the green field across the fence–I was OK with the patchy grass holding one perfectly beautiful flower in my own yard. So, I started writing my feelings…part here, part at my own blog. I advocated for my son. I tried to educate Moms who were being Too Pushy on the proper way to advocate (that begins with being well educated and not screaming…professionalism always counts!). I felt like…

Workplace Discrimination
Tourette Syndrome Message Boards23 Jan 2012 | 8:44 amMy husband has Tourette's and has had the most difficult time with employers. Granted, we live in the country and he tends to do manual labor, which I realize tends to have less empathetic or open minded individuals, but still!Today is his 11th day of employment with his new job. He was pulled off a job and sent for a second physical because someone complained about his ticks. Now, there were a lot of guys hired at the same time he was, yet he is the only person required to have a second medical exam. He passed the first one, hence his being hired. Isn't this… -

World Changer
25 Jan 2012 | 4:00 pmEight years ago today my world changed more than I even knew at the time with the birth of our daughter. I could never have known, then, exactly how much this little bundle of flesh would change my world. Everyone said she would turn our world upside-down, but even they didn’t know she would turn us inside out, too. I thought I knew so much about how the world worked. Something about earning a Ph.D. makes you think you can take on anything and master it. Parenting, however, has little to do with book smarts. Parenting special needs style takes it all to yet another level. Four years… -

On Validation…
20 Jan 2012 | 12:00 pmSo, we are finally settling in and making life work. Part of that means we had to get all Jack’s records and get them transferred to new physician’s here. That was a ton of fun. (rollllllls eyes) However, the most interesting thing happened. We took Jack to his new GI on Friday and she… listened. asked questions. didn’t suggest we shove food down his throat. validated our feelings. Did you catch that? She validated what we have been doing/thinking/feeling for FIVE years! She told us we were right to fight with the other GI. Why does it have to be this way? Why…

Before And After Photos
24 Jan 2012 | 7:36 pmWhen I look through my pictures, I define them all in my head as before and after photos. Before Bob died. And after. I wonder, like one wonders if she looks different after losing her virginity, if I look different to other people after Bob's death. Can they tell I'm a widow? Does it show in my face? Before. After. The pictures of the kids, of the house, our pets, everything in our lives—they are all defined as before and after. There is not a single photo that I see that I do not know where it falls on that continuum. I might not know the year, month, or place, but I do know where that… -
BTW, He's Dead
18 Jan 2012 | 11:04 pmI feel, sometimes, like that's how it goes. I get an email asking for his signature, or a piece of mail, or some such thing. I reply. Sometimes I soften the blow for the recipient. Sometimes—fuck it, I just don't have it in me. I take a Sharpie to the envelope and scrawl DECEASED (but, leave out MOTHER FUCKER, which is what I really want to write). Yeah, he's dead. You'll need to deal with me. Return to sender. Deceased. Oh, BTW, widow. Jaded? Maybe. Reality? Yup. I check "Ms." and mark "widow," but I still get his mail and have to explain at least once a week that he is gone. I explain it… -
Tomayto, Tomahto, Donkey, Rabbit, Prick
16 Jan 2012 | 8:42 pmSo, I'm killing time, waiting to hear some news. No matter what happens, my day has been made perfect by this: I've also discovered, after twenty+ years, that I CAN DRINK BEER. Well, some kinds of beer. So, I'm enjoying a lovely bottle of Tangerine Wheat from Lost Coast Brewery. It is, le yum. I highly recommend it. Another fun find from the past week: Richmond Prick (which, is not penis, I swear) at Up & Under in Point Richmond (EAT IT. Be brave, just do it!) They also have tasty fish tacos and flaccid rugby balls masquerading as light fixtures–how is that not full of win? Also, you… -
Shock: The Blurry Bits
15 Jan 2012 | 3:06 amIt's normal, I suppose–all of the bits and pieces I can't remember. Something will trigger a slice of a memory, but I can't find the pieces the go around that memory; I can't fill it in. I don't know if I want to. I don't know if I need to. My head will get swimmy and full with the trying to remember if I push too hard. I was playing a silly little game called Unblock that I play to help me get to sleep where you shuffle cars around to make way for your car to get out into traffic. I've played it countless times, but tonight the black cars reminded me of a funeral, which made me think of…

The Challenge of Children with Special Needs
20 Jan 2012 | 7:35 amLabels abound, some of them distasteful, some inaccurate, some just in vogue, others useful to understanding and planning. I am speaking about children who have substantial special needs. They may be diagnosed with complex disorders such as Autism, Asperger’s, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, Bipolar Disorder, Tourette’s, or Mental Retardation. All are challenging to identify reliably, and even more challenging to treat effectively. We can add the physical disabilities of blindness, deafness, and a multitude of serious medical disorders that strike children and significantly limit… -

Uneducated Wife
22 Jan 2012 | 11:37 amI have known my husband of 1 year for the past 10 years. Several years ago, he told me he had been diagnosed with Tourettes as a child. But, because I didn't see the obvious symptoms, I figured it was either a very mild case or he 'grew out of it' as he became an adult. However, there are several habits of his that I'm not sure are bad habits and a constant source of conflict or if they are indeed, an impulse or tic due to the Tourettes. It doesn't matter how often or how severely I comment on his frequent belching, he continues to do it daily. It seems no matter the amount of discussion on… -
is it still a tic? if it isnt vocal?
4 Jan 2012 | 10:14 amIm a newbie, hello. I just posted in the introduction thread if youre interested. But I was hoping I could get an answer I am very much wondering about. One reason I have not seeked out a specialist is because one of my most occuring 'tics' is unorthidox at its best, and usually neurologists dont like unorthidox.I have autism, and was nonverbal most of my life. So I never talked and taught myself NOT to talk in case I said something emberassing. However, I still repeat my own and other peoples words once to several times. To simplify it I will hear or say 'okay' and so I will have to… -

4 Jan 2012 | 10:04 amHello peeps. Im not sure if this board is entirely active anymore, or that often. But my name is Mackie and I am a 24 year old female living with Autism and its comorbidities. Growing up my OCD, Sensory Processing Disorder and social deficits of Autism steered the wheel of my life. I always had tics, however they seemed to have worsened as an adult starting a few years ago. I am now searching for answers because my tics go to the point of disrupting my breathing patterns and physical comfort. Not to mention the annoyance of some of the repetitiveness of them.I have a Neurologist for… -
Question about who can diagnose Tourette's (m)
23 Dec 2011 | 10:27 amOur neurologist stated that he cannot diagnose our sons condition as Tourette's, as he can't use particular codes and can only diagnose it as "complex tic disorder". Has anyone ever heard of this? Do we need a psychiatrist to diagnose it officially?

You won't believe what my husband did
27 Jan 2012 | 10:26 amI am lousy at sending things. Mailing things. Like LOUSY.I have a ton of people in my life who are amazing at sending me things. Cards, gifts, funny little things they find along the way. Like AMAZING.So, yesterday morning there was a knock at the door. Our sweet flower delivery woman was standing there, as she has before, delivering flowers to someone in the park. But this time, the card had my name on it: "Christine." FLOWERS! FOR ME! Eeeee! The card was not signed. It just said, "You're the best!" It was obviously written by one of the women at the flower shop. My mind immediately went to… -
Get out of your own way
26 Jan 2012 | 11:40 amSixteen years ago, if I hadn't dared to move to a city I didn't know, take a job that made absolutely no sense to me, just to be closer to a man I knew I loved ... I wouldn't still be with that man today. He is my life love. We both make the other want to poke our own eyes out with a stick all. the. time. But we wouldn't want to share that insanity with anyone else. Every single day.If we hadn't dared to move forward with an adoption, despite the naysayers, we would not be sitting in the family we have today. Good, bad, ugly ... horrific. I still choose my family. I am glad for my family. If… -

Death to the Sexperiment
23 Jan 2012 | 9:43 amIt has come to my attention that Ed Young, Jr. has reclaimed his "Sexperiment" from years ago. He wrote a book. He's pimping the heck out of it. So, to call February the "Sexperiment" may lead people to believe that I'm aligning myself with he and his products (and by "products," I mean books and Bible studies, not lube and toys).I kept the name as a gentle mockery of the fact that Michael and I totally out-bumped-uglies against the Youngs that first year. That was the fun of it for me. Now ... not so much. We are going to rename it. It belongs to all of us. We're taking it back. Lube talk…
